Training During the COVID-19 Pandemic:

Dear NSEC Authorized Outreach Trainers,

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Office of Training and Education (OTE) continues to monitor the COVID-19 virus’s impact to the OTI Education Center and Outreach Training Programs. To keep our staff and students safe, some changes will be required here at the National Safety Education Center.

The best method of communication is by email, until we resume normal operations.

As of May 2021, we are still working remotely for the most part. We will try to have at least one person in the office to answer your phone calls; however, we will be checking our emails more frequently, so if you have questions or need assistance, please write to us at nsec@niu.edu (for Nancy) or nsec_outreach@niu.edu (for Joe).

Slightly Longer Processing and Mailing Times for Cards

You may continue to submit training card requests as normal using this portal, but should expect to wait longer to receive the cards. At this time, we can still guarantee that you will receive your order in the mail within 30 days of placing the request.

Rules for Training Using Video Conferencing

You must obtain advance written permission from the education center before conducting each virtual training. We understand that many institutions are still closed down or have temporarily switched their classrooms to online only. If you find yourself unable to safely teach outreach courses in person, you might consider video conferencing (teaching online using a webcam) as a viable alternative.

If you would like to make a written request to teach the 10-hour or 30-hour using Video Conferencing, please read section R.2, pages 19 through 21 of the OSHA Outreach Training Program Requirements and use subheadings a through p as a guideline when writing your request. Then please email your exception request letter to nsec@niu.edu or nsec_outreach@niu.edu. OSHA normally requires 60 days advance notice before virtual training; however, this has been changed to 7 days for the time being. Make sure you are as detailed as possible in writing your letter; missing information could result in denial of your request. Specific course dates must be provided, and you will need to obtain separate approval for each virtual courseFor final approval, you must also email an invitation link for the virtual meeting or classroom to nsec@niu.edu before you begin the training; this may be used for monitoring purposes.

If you are conducting training in person, please continue to use social distancing, mask wearing in the presence of any non-vaccinated people, hand washing, and regularly disinfecting classroom surfaces to minimize the health risk to you and your students.

Welcome to the NSEC Trainer Portal! You can purchase OSHA cards here for $8 per student, check the status of your order, or review your previously submitted paperwork. Replacement cards are also available for $25 per student. Thank you for being an NSEC customer and please reach out to me if you need any assistance!

If this is your first time visiting the website, please CLICK HERE to download and read the instructions for how to register and order cards.

- Before you can log in for the first time, please set up your account by clicking 'Register' from the menu.
- After you upload your trainer card and register, wait for Joe to approve it (usually less than 1 business day).
- Then your NEW 4-digit Trainer ID number and password will automatically be emailed to you from noreply@nsecosha.com.
- If you do not receive your password within 24 hours, the email was likely blocked by your spam filter. To avoid this problem, you can add noreply@nsecosha.com as a contact in your email, which will ensure that passwords, approvals, and receipts always make it to your inbox.
- Call or email Joe if you have any problems getting registered.

Please be aware that the portal now auto-saves your partially completed report every 60 seconds and will automatically log you out every 30 minutes. Successful submissions will see a confirmation page and receive an emailed receipt instantly, while failed submissions will display any errors you need to correct in red text.

  • Trainers must submit their reports within 30 days of class completion in order to be issued outreach cards.
    THE PORTAL WILL NOT ACCEPT A REQUEST AFTER 30 DAYS HAVE PASSED. If your report is too late to submit, please contact Joe to discuss the matter.

  • Trainers must distribute student course completion cards to their students within 30 days of receiving them from NSEC.

  • Trainers must issue student course completion cards directly to the student, regardless of who paid for the training. Cards must be sent to the student's home or work address listed on the daily sign-in sheets, or handed to students directly. Trainers who fail to comply with this requirement may be subjected to corrective action by OSHA, up to and including the revocation of authorized trainer status.

  • In case of lost or stolen outreach cards, each student is allowed only one replacement. The replacement card must be ordered by the trainer who taught the course, using this portal. The replacement fee is $25/card. OSHA will not allow replacement cards for courses that took place more than five(5) years ago; in that case the student will have to take the course again to receive a card.

  • The Outreach Training Program is voluntary and promotes workplace safety and health by training workers about their rights and workplace hazards. Visit OSHA's Outreach Training Program web page for more information.

  • You can go to verify.nsecosha.com to access the online training verification website. You can use this to verify that a student's outreach card number is valid, or to prove that you are an authorized trainer.


How long does it take to get student cards once I have requested and paid for them?
2-3 weeks. It varies with seasonal demand for cards and with the speed of the US Postal Service.

Do I have to pay using a credit or debit card?
Yes. We apologize for any inconvenience but we can no longer accept checks or purchase orders for student cards.

Why does the charge on my credit card say "RMEC" instead of NIU or NSEC?
Although the NSEC is physically located at Northern Illinois University, we rent this website from our friends at the Rocky Mountain Education Center. This website was developed by RMEC, but is overseen by Joe Kauzlarich at the NSEC.

I am trying to submit a request for 1 or 2 students and it won't let me.
OSHA requires that each classroom have a minimum of 3 students in it. Please call Joe to discuss.

Why is the website acting strangely when I try to enter start and end times?
If for example you are trying to enter a time of 8 AM, you need to type "0 8 0 0 A"

The website denies my request even though I have entered the topic times correctly.
First make sure that you are typing the hours in the correct format. One hour is "1.00" and half an hour is "0.50".
Please review OSHA's required minimums for each individual topic. In particular, note that the four individual "Focus Four" subjects must add up to a total of at least 4 hours when added together.

KNOWN BUGS IN THE PORTAL (we are always working to improve the code of the portal)

  • On certain computers when trying to submit a A NEW card request, a previously completed request will appear. To fix this, simply click the 'Clear Form' button.

  • When entering credit card information, the sample expiration date cannot be typed over. You must click inside the box, press the backspace key until the sample expiration date has been removed. Then it will allow you to type in your card's expiration date.

  • When paying for replacement cards, navigate to Past Card Requests and do not use the search bar. The search bar is currently bugged and will cause an "Invalid amount" error when trying to put in credit card information.

  • When generating a pdf document of your training report, one of the electives often does not populate correctly, making the pdf inaccurate by 1 hour. However the report stored in our database shows the correct number of hours.

  • The portal is currently unable to process accent marks or special characters in a student's name. For these cards to print correctly, the accent marks must be left out.
